Design Inspiration: Magical Moon

Design Inspiration: Magical Moon

As the Earth's only natural satellite, the moon remains one of the most recognisable objects in the night sky. It has captured our imagination since centuries as amply demonstrated by the wealth of resources like images, drawing, songs, stories and designs for fashion and homeware.

In different parts of the world, there are different folklore associated with the moon. Example, "Man in the Moon" or "Jade Rabbit". In Hindu mythology, moon represents many aspects of life and feminine creative energy. Even Hindu God, Shiva, the destroyer, is believed to wear moon as his head jewel to depict that destruction leads to creation and thus destruction is not the end but a process to start afresh.

This fascinating astronomical neighbour of ours has following phases -

  1. New Moon: A new moon happens when the moon is located between the sun and the Earth thus we cannot typically see it. This signifies start of a new cycle.
  2. Waxing Crescent: Looks like a tiny sliver of fingernail
  3. First Quarter: At this stage the lunar cycle is 1/4 of the way completed
  4. Waxing Gibbous: Greater amount of moon is now visible
  5. Full Moon: Moon in its full glory
  6. Waning Gibbous: Smaller amounts can be seen each night
  7. Last Quarter: Waning each night finally leads to last quarter
  8. Waning Crescent: Appears in crescent shape, gradually growing smaller until it looks a silver of fingernail

Taking inspiration from these moon phases, we have curated some items from our Fair Trade business.
