Design Inspiration: Hamsa

Design Inspiration: Hamsa

The hamsa or “evil eye” is considered a symbol of good fortune and luck. Often seen in Buddhism and Hinduism, Jewish and Muslim cultures, the Hamsa symbol is traditionally considered as a protective talisman. The palm-shaped amulet is often used in jewellery and home decor items.

In Indian culture, Hamsa can assume many meanings and forms.

  • The Hamsa as a bird is portrayed in later Sanskrit literature as a swan, which is a symbol for the inner Self. The Hamsa bird is the vehicle for Lord Brahma, the Creator, and his consort Sarasvati Devi as the bringers of knowledge.
  • The Hamsa also represents the union of Shiva and Shakti, which are Ha (self as I) and Sa (self as inner being), Sun and Moon, the incoming and outgoing vital energies.
  • The Hamsa can also mean "five" and is thought to represent the fingers of our hand. It is considered a symbol for our chakras, energy flow, five senses and mudras that affect them.
Each finger connects to an element and chakra:
    • Thumb- Fire element, solar plexus chakra.
    • Forefinger- Air element, heart chakra.
    • Middle Finger- Ethereal elements, throat chakra.
    • Ring Finger- Earth element, root chakra.
    • Pinky Finger- Water element, sacral chakra.

The hamsa is meant to be displayed or worn with the fingers facing down to offer protection, and bring luck and strength.
